Meerkats live in one of the world's harshest environments - the deserts and the grasslands of southern Africa.

Water is scarce, so they rarely drink - instead they find moisture in roots, plants and insects. Spending time in underground burrows is cooler and provides some protection from predators.

Meerkats have a unique social dynamic and love to hang out in groups known as a mob. Each member of the mob participates in gathering food, keeping a look out for predators, and taking care of the young.
