Celebrate Auckland Zoo’s centenary with this limited edition t-shirt.
To celebrate our 100th year, we’ve created an exclusive range of t-shirts featuring a selection of species under Auckland Zoo’s care, plus our special anniversary logo.
There are 11 different Galápagos tortoise species; down from 15 when Charles Darwin first visited in 1835. Although protected by the Ecuadorian government since 1970, six are Critically Endangered, and three are Endangered.
Their population decline has been driven by introduced species, including rats, pigs, and dogs that prey on tortoise eggs and hatchlings. In addition, Species such as goats, cattle, donkeys - and invasive plants - are known to damage and destroy their natural habitats.
There are many Galápagos tortoise restoration programmes, including captive breed-for-release programmes by the Charles Darwin Research Station and Galápagos Conservancy, doing amazing conservation work.
By purchasing this t-shirt, you’ll not only sport a unique design, but also help our conservation efforts for this important species.
